2009 Pilgrimage to Lourdes, France

Friday 3rd to Friday 10th July 2009

Our Lourdes 2009 group raised £8,500 towards their costs, quite an impressive figure for only 24 students.  Well done and thank you to everyone involved.

We shall be leaving from Doncaster on Friday 3 and will be travelling with some of the sick who are delighted to be able to have helpers at the airport with their luggage.  We had a very pleasant evening on Tuesday 23 June when students were presented with their sweatshirts at the end of our pre-departure Mass for friends and families.  Father Phil our school chaplain blessed the shirts and spoke about the wonderful experience of Lourdes.  On Friday 26 June we shall be joining the rest of the Diocese at the pre-departure Mass at Trinity and All Saints in Leeds.

Our pilgrimage to Lourdes, France
It is a working pilgrimage where pupils help disabled people every day travel to and from their hotel to shrines, chapels and events. This has all been arranged through the Dioceses of Leeds.

Pupils and staff have begun fundraising and have been very successful in Mass Collections, Bake Sales, Second Hand Book Sales and Flap Jack Friday within the college.  Thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who has made a donation, it is much appreciated.  On Friday 15th May 2009 we have arranged a Promise Auction for staff, parents and friends of our college.  If you would like to provide us with a lot to auction please contact Mrs Geaney at school.

A massive thank you for everyones continued support.

Friday 27 June 2008 - Friday 4 July 2008

The staff were extremely proud of our students who will have many happy memories of the pilgrimage.  Many compliments have been received.

After a long and tiring journey the group settled in to their hotel ready to start the work they had set out to do. The following morning everyone was up early, ready to collect the wheelchairs for the sick and to meet their sick pilgrims to take them to the Opening Mass. The sun shone as the fleet of ‘yellow tops’ meandered along the road with their new friends. This was the first time the youth had visited the Domaine and encountered its serenity and beauty.

Throughout the week many more special Masses and services were held, the Blessing of the Hands where all who care for the sick have their hands blessed. The International Mass in the Underground Basilica is always a sight to take your breath away and again this year our students could not believe how vast and elaborate the service was and number of people from all over the world who were there, an irrespective of language all shared in the Mass together.

The Mass celebrated high in the hills in the City of the Trees was also another very arduous task for the students to mobilise the sick to such a venue, but again they did as they were asked without a moan and with a smile on their faces. Following the Mass was a picnic and in the afternoon all the youth animated the Stations of the Cross. Such a wonderful adaptation brought tears to the eyes of many who watched.

Of course, the Anointing of the Sick is the most moving Mass when everyone is joined together and can take part with their Sick pilgrims in this very special service.

The Closing Youth Service was of course a lively celebration of the week we had spent together and the Closing Mass followed by the procession when the Bishop lights the Diocesan Candle seemed to come all too soon.

During the week we made many new friends from other schools and of course the sick pilgrims and their families.   In the little spare time that was available we had fun during the day and at night we danced and danced.

On the last evening we visited the sick at their hotel and sang with them, to which many said was a perfect ending to a perfect week.

We all came home vowing to return again having had a wonderful experience of Lourdes.
