Valdarno Valley

The Italian Job - June and July 2005

From 29 June to 5 July we were delighted to welcome into our school 11 students and 2 teachers visiting us from a school in Italy "San Giovanni" in the Valdarno Valley, near Florence.

The Italians stayed with 7 of our families. They visited York, enjoying the dungeons in particular and also loved shopping in Kingsgate. The Mayor of Kirklees received the group together with some of our own students at the Town Hall. Other activities included a visit to the Mining Museum, Richard Dunn sports centre, bowling and a barbeque and disco in school on the last night.

The Italians spoke English really well and soon adapted to our customs. We are sure they enjoyed their stay. From the tears at the farewell we could tell they did not want to go home! Huddersfield and Halifax are obviously good places to be, or could it just have been the fantastic hospitality shown by our families?

A huge thank you to all the families, in particular Mr Dye and also to Mr Wigglesworth at All Saints.

How was it all organised?

Students in 8T have been writing to an Italian school “San Giovanni” in the Valdarno Valley, near Florence since 2004.  This began as a request to Miss Kernan from the Italian school through the Aunt of one of our students who works there.  Miss Kernan then began the project through one of her teaching groups.

One of our students, Natalie Dye, visited the area summer 2004 and was made so welcome together with her family, that they wanted to reciprocate and invite the Italian students to Britain. This resulted in the above visit. Arrangements were made for accommodation with All Saints students and friends.

Who knows what next, maybe, a return visit to Italy? ….... watch this space for future information!

Ciao.
