What is GCSE Drama all about?
GCSE Drama gives the students the opportunity to learn and develop a number of Performance and Acting Skills. Students will be involved in many performances during the two year course ranging from scripted work, play reading to devising work. Students will also learn about the production side of Theatre by participating in workshops where they will learn about Lighting and Sound, make-up, masks, set design and costume design. There will be opportunities to go on Theatre trips and perform in lots of public performances.

Students participate in various skills workshops where they develop the following areas:

For each practical performance students are required to write a 500 word essay about the performance.

Written Exam
Students answer questions about a play they have studied over the two years. They also answer questions about a performance they have been to see.

How does it follow on from what I have learned before?
GCSE Drama follows on from all the drama work that students learn at KS3
(Year 7-9). Students improve their acting ability by regular rehearsing and performing.
What about my results?
You can achieve grades A*-G in GCSE Drama. The final grade is reported in August.
What other skills might I develop?
GCSE Drama gives students a number of acting skills, but it also helps them develop life skills such as team-work, confidence, presentation skills, public speaking, interview techniques
What could I do next with GCSE Drama?
There are lots of things you could do in the Performing Arts Industry if you have a Drama GCSE. If you are unsure, the best thing would be to speak to your teacher.
You could go on to study one of the many performing Arts courses offered at the school, such as BTEC National Awards & Certificates in Performing Arts. You could also go on to further education to study for an AS or A level in drama.

The great thing about this course is that it requires students to participate in a number of practical workshops associated with the Performing Arts Industry. There is no written exam at the end of year 11, students are marked on their contribution during lessons and performance work.
What will I learn?
Students will broaden their skills in the field of performing Arts. They will learn about a number of subjects:
Acting
Singing
Dance
Music
Music Technology
DJ’ing
Lighting
Sound
Stage Management
Set designer
Costume designer
Props
Masks
Puppets
Make-up.
At the end of each year, the students produce a performance of their own which is shown to a public audience. The theme of the performance is given to the students from the exam board and they work as a team to put it all together
Is there any written coursework?
Although there are no essays to write or exams to sit, students are required to keep a portfolio about the work they have participated in. This means they have to write a log after each lesson explaining what they did and learnt in the lesson. This portfolio acts as evidence to show students have learned the skills listed above.
How do I opt for Performing Arts?
This GCSE is a vocational GCSE and can be studied for one or two years. The best way to study this course is when it is taken alongside GCSE Drama. Students produce the same type of work so this means students can obtain 3 GCSE’s by studying the one subject. You will start this course in year 9 and obtain the single award in the summer.
