Technology

Essence Statements

As everyday technology increases in complexity, so our need for understanding increases with it. Our Design & Technology courses aim to teach students about this technical understanding, looking at different design methods and the skills needed to produce quality practical solutions to real life problems. We would suggest that all students opt to take a technology subject, as it is a well rounded subject with real world links, making future career opportunities. Apart from the obvious fact that it is fun, making things as well as learning the theory.

During the courses students should develop:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Creativity and capability
  • Autonomy, sensitivity and self confidence
  • Responsibility as an individual and as a team member
  • Awareness, understanding and pride in their own learning
  • Understanding how Technological activities affect others
  • Awareness of others’ needs

All the Design & Technology courses relate to DESIGNING and MAKING. They all have the same broad areas of study, looking at Materials and Components, Design and Market influences, and Processes and Manufacture, the different courses covering information unique to each focus area. All courses require students to use ICT and computer skills within both the design and manufacturing processes.

The courses will acknowledge and develop from skills learnt in Key Stage 3, being meaningful and help prepare for the demands of future technological innovations. The courses should support the demands of individual students and potential, stretching the most able and serving the needs of all. Students should be able to draw on and make use of information from other subjects, especially Art, English, ICT, Mathematics and Science. As well as supporting the development of transferable life skills and problem solving. Our specific key skills are Application of Number, Communication and Information Technology.

Design & Technology – Life Skills
Certificate of Achievement

A course where foundation students are involved in designing and making; delivered through a variety of material areas, food, textiles and resistant materials. Projects are undertaken using a wide range of specific technological skills within directed activities.

The projects or ‘units’ are set internally and are tailored to the interests and needs of the teaching group.

Students will work at their own pace to complete and evidence the necessary outcomes to be accredited within each unit. The majority of work will be completed within normal contact time, although homework will be used to support unit work.

During the year students will be awarded certificates after completing each unit, these can and have been useful with future employers, as a record of what skills the students have gained throughout the course.

Examination Details

This is a non-examination course where students are taught valuable life skills and that enables them to gain Certificates of Achievement, as the units are covered.
