Ash Wednesday - Wednesday 25 February 2009  Return to top

Ash Wednesday is one of the key dates in the church, not only as the start of Lent, but as a time of a fresh beginning with ourselves as we say sorry for what we have done wrong. Ash Wednesday at All Saints included a service for each student within their form. Each form started the morning by thinking about Lent and its meanings. Each individual was prompted to further think about how they might do something different in their life to help both themselves and others.

As directed by staff each individual form left their form room and followed a route around the college. Students stopped at different stations to hear a message about Lent such as fasting, almsgiving, prayer and how we should act over the up and coming weeks.

When the groups arrived into the hall as final destination they reflected on Lenten pledges they had written. They then approached me and other prefects in the centre of the hall and received ashes on their forehead as a traditional symbol of showing that they were sorry for their sins.

Lent is a time of true preparation for Easter and was a time of true reflection. The atmosphere throughout the morning was very sincere. Each student really benefited from the event and I hope next year the prefects enjoy taking on the responsibility of giving out ashes as much as we did.
