OCR National Child Development

The course has 3 units

Unit R018 (exam, 50%, 1½ hours)

LO1: Understand reproduction and the roles and responsibilities of parenthood.

  1. The wide range of factors that affect the decision to have children
  2. Preconception health
  3. Roles and responsibilities of parenthood
  4. To recognise and evaluate methods of contraception, their efficiency and reliability
  5. The structure and function of the male and female reproductive system

 

LO2: Understand antenatal care and preparation for birth

  1. The roles of the different health professional supporting the mother
  2. The importance of antenatal and parenting classes
  3. Routine checks carried out at antenatal clinic, inc scans
  4. Specialised diagnostic tests
  5. The choices available for delivery
  6. The stages of labour and methods of delivery, including pain relief

 

LO3: Understand postnatal checks, postnatal provision and conditions for development

  1. The postnatal check of the new-born baby
  2. Needs of premature babies
  3. Postnatal prevision for the mother and family
  4. Conditions for development
  5. Need for acceptable pattern of behaviour and approaches to discipline

 

LO4: Understanding how to recognise, manage and prevent childhood illnesses

  1. How immunity to disease can be acquired
  2. How to recognise and treat common childhood ailments
  3. When to seek treatment by a doctor/emergency services
  4. Diet related illnesses, obesity
  5. Needs of an ill child, preparing a child for a hospital stay

 

LO5: Child safety

  1. How to create a safe, child friendly environment
  2. Safety labelling
  3. Common childhood accidents
  4. Social safety
  5. Internet safety

 

Unit RO19: Understanding the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years. (Centre Assessed, Task 25%)

LO 1:  Understanding the key factors when choosing equipment for babies from birth to 12 months

L O 2: Understand the key factors when choosing equipment for children from one to five years

LO 3: Know the nutritional guidelines and requirements for children from birth to five years

LO 4: Be able to investigate and develop feeding solutions for children from birth to five years

Unit RO20:  Understanding the development of the child from birth to five years. (Centre Assessed, Task 25%)

LO 1: Understand the physical, intellectual and social developmental norms from birth to five years

LO 2: Understand the benefits of learning through play

LO 3: Be able to plan different play activities for a chosen developmental area with a child from birth to five years

LO 4: Be able to carry out and evaluate different play activities for a chosen developmental area with a child from birth to five years
