In Year 8 students are required to select their Option subjects. At present students have the option of studying AQA GCSE Dance. This course allows students to explore Dance and performance skills through three main components:
Students learn how to respond creatively to a stimulus before being required to choreograph their own complete dance. Students learn about, understand and are able to apply the following whilst creating their choreography:
- Action, spatial and dynamic content of a dance
- Choreographic processes
- Structuring and Choreographic Devices
- Performance environments
- Communication of choreographic intent
Choreography is assessed internally through the creation and filming of a dance piece that is then moderated by the exam board.
Students must develop as a performer in order to perform dance as a soloist and in groups. As part of the course, students are expected to develop the following skills before performing as a soloist for a minimum of three minutes, demonstrating their understanding of:
- Physical skills and attributes,
- Technical and Expressive skills
- Mental skills and attributes
- Safe working practices
Performance is assessed through a practical examination. This required a performance of 2 phrases set by the exam board.
Through written communication and use of appropriate terminology, students will critically analyse, interpret and evaluate their own work from the performance and choreography components and also demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of professional practice by studying the six set works in the GCSE Dance Anthology. Dance appreciation is assessed through a written exam of one and a half hours duration.
